Ia. Forces Shaping the Emerging Bioeconomy
in Agriculture

Global agriculture is at a defining moment.  Society looks to policy makers and leadership groups in agriculture to develop solutions for world hunger, biofuels, drought and management of water resources, zoonotic and pandemic diseases, scarce land resources and a safe food supply.  Agriculture is in a key position to provide these solutions as long as technology is adopted and optimally used.  During this session, you will hear some of the leaders in Agribusiness speak on how they are positioning their organizations for winning solutions and strategies to meet these challenges.

Research Advances in Georgia: Neuroscience

Neuroscience is one of the strongest areas of interdisiciplinary and inter-institutional research in Georgia.  This research is pushing the envelope on one of science's last and most daunting frontiers — the brain. This work holds great promise for understanding basic brain function and treating illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease and post traumatic stress disorder.  The Center for Behavioral Neuroscience will host this plenary session where speakers will discuss recent advances in neuroscience research from the laboratories of scientists at Georgia’s research universities.

Delivering the Golden Egg”
IPOs, M&A and Partnering in the Life Sciences Industry

Investors put money into emerging life science companies expecting to profitably take money out later.  This “exit” ordinarily takes the form of either going public or being acquired by a larger company.  What is the current status of IPOs and M&A in the industry?  And how does partnering affect the eventual exit for a company?  Our panel of industry experts will provide
up-to-date insights.

CONCURRENT FOCUS SESSION

IId. Why Georgia?:  The Ascent and Maturation of Georgia's Talent Pool and Biotech Labor Market presented by The GaBio Emerging Leaders Network

The first question a biotech business asks before locating in a certain region is often:  "Is there a large, educated, and specialized workforce in place to support our firm?"  Likewise, the first question a young biotech professional asks when choosing a market is:  "Is there sufficient opportunity for advancement towards a meaningful career?"  For the first time, the answer to both of those questions in Georgia is an unequivocal "Yes!"  In this session, leading economic experts will discuss Georgia's human resources economics, and some of the region's leading companies will discuss the arrival of Georgia as a mature hotbed of talent competitive with any other U.S. market.

Cardiovascular Innovation in Public-Private Partnerships
Cardiovascular disease remains the nation’s number one health care problem and Georgia has some of the highest rates in the country for heart disease, stroke and hypertension.  There is a need not only for new technologies for cardiovascular disease but also for new delivery and business models that can function in the rapidly changing and increasingly challenging regulatory and reimbursement environment.  Atlanta doctors, institutions, and universities have been at the forefront of both technological and programmatic solutions.  This panel will bring together some of these key innovators in cardiology and cardiac surgery as well as administrators from the region’s leading cardiovascular institutions to discuss these challenges.  Issues and challenges surrounding the use of public/private partnerships to bring new products to market will also be addressed.
