Barry D. Goldstein, PhD
Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Medical College of Georgia
Dr. Goldstein, a native of Brooklyn, New York, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Adelphi University in 1975 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Pharmacology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1979. He was elected UMDNJ Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 1997. Dr. Goldstein completed his post-doctoral training as a Research Associate at the University of Illinois School of Medicine and joined the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, in 1981. He was appointed Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Medical College of Georgia in 1991, Vice President in 1992, Senior Vice President in 1998 and Provost in 2003. He holds the rank of Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology in the Schools of Medicine and Graduate Studies and is internationally recognized in the area of neuroscience research. As Provost, Dr. Goldstein has spearheaded the effort at the Medical College of Georgia to enhance teaching and learning through the use of electronically distributed technologies, which include distance education, groupware and world wide web utilization in education. He has, in conjunction with the deans, helped to enhance the research mission of the Institution. Dr. Goldstein is active in professional organizations in academia and the sciences and has contributed more than 70 publications to his field. As a faculty member, his involvement in faculty governance has included serving as chairman of the Academic Council of the Faculty Organization. At the state level in health professions, Dr. Goldstein has been involved in assessing the health care personnel needs for Georgia. He has served as Chairman of the Governor=s Health Care Personnel Study Commission, which addressed the need for nursing personnel in the state and presented a comprehensive plan to meet those needs in the state of Georgia, and as Chairman of the State Health Planning Agency=s Health Care Personnel Planning Committee, and is an active member of the Georgia Hospital Association Task Force.
